"An unforgettable portrait of a woman who became one of the most notorious figures of her day and whose scandalous story sheds fascinating light not only on her own tumultuous time but ours as well." — Harold Schechter, author of Hell's Princess: The Mystery of Belle Guinness, Butcher of Men

Sex, corruption, and power: the rise and fall of the Red Widow of Paris

Paris, 1889: Margeurite Steinheil is a woman with ambition. But having been born into a middle-class family and trapped in a marriage to a failed artist twenty years her senior, she knows her options are limited.

Determined to fashion herself into a new woman, Meg orchestrates a scandalous plan with her most powerful resource: her body. Amid the dazzling glamor, art, and romance of bourgeois Paris, she takes elite men as her lovers, charming her way into the good graces of the rich and powerful. Her ambitions, though, go far beyond becoming the most desirable woman in Paris; at her core, she is a woman determined to conquer French high society. But the game she plays is a perilous one: navigating misogynistic double-standards, public scrutiny, and political intrigue, she is soon vaulted into infamy in the most dangerous way possible.

A real-life femme fatale, Meg influences government positions and resorts to blackmail—and maybe even poisoning—to get her way. Leaving a trail of death and disaster in her wake, she earns the name the "Red Widow" for mysteriously surviving a home invasion that leaves both her husband and mother dead. With the police baffled and the public enraged, Meg breaks every rule in the bourgeois handbook and becomes the most notorious woman in Paris.

An unforgettable true account of sex, scandal, and murder, The Red Widow is the story of a woman determined to rise—at any cost.

Historian Horowitz (women's, gender, and sexuality studies, Washington and Lee Univ.; Friendship and Politics in Post-Revolutionary France) presents a page-turning true crime thriller featuring real-life femme fatale Marguerite "Meg" Steinheil. Trapped in a loveless marriage with an unsuccessful artist twenty years her senior, Meg found herself using her body as a tool to climb through the Parisian social hierarchy in 1889. Meg was known for taking on lovers, most notably the French president, who could aid her social mobility. She was determined to use any tool at her disposal, including sex, blackmail, and possibly even murder, to reach the upper echelon of society. When her husband and mother were found dead, Meg and the life she scrupulously built began to come into question. True crime readers will appreciate the fast-paced, well researched narrative, and are sure to be drawn in by this tale. Horowitz builds empathy for Meg, first in her descriptions of her humble upbringing and lost love, and later in her unhappy marriage and the misogyny and classism she faces as an adult. VERDICT Readers will be captivated by Meg's story and Horowitz's clever crafting of her tale.--Mattie Cook

Horowitz (Friendship and Politics in Post-Revolutionary France), a professor of French history at Washington & Lee University, delivers a colorful biography of Marguerite Steinheil (1869–1954). Trapped in a frustrating marriage to a “passive” and “easily discouraged” artist, Steinheil helped sell her husband’s paintings by having sex with his patrons. She also formed connections through sexual affairs with diplomats, bankers, and even French president Félix Faure, who “had a fatal stroke in the middle of an assignation with .” Famous for her beauty and her rule-breaking behavior, Steinheil was the toast of Belle Époque Paris until one night in May 1908, when her husband and mother were killed. Steinheil, who was found tied to her bed, claimed that a group of robe-wearing robbers had broken into the home and committed the murders. Though her attempts to frame multiple people for the crime fell apart, Steinheil was protected by law enforcement officials and journalists who “did more to uphold the social hierarchy than pursue justice,” according to Horowitz. She was acquitted at trial and moved to London, where she married an English baron. Horowitz skillfully contextualizes this lurid tale with details about the Dreyfus affair and other contemporaneous events, and draws a nuanced portrait of Steinheil. This hits the sweet spot between true crime and women’s history. Photos.

A professor of history at Washington and Lee University, Horowitz paints a dazzling yet nuanced portrait of femme fatale Marguerite Steinheil, a woman who would come to be known as the Red Widow. When this artist's wife was found tied to a bed and her husband and mother murdered, she quickly went from self-made Parisian socialite to homicide suspect. Initial descriptions of thieving foreigners quickly turned into Steinheil framing those closest to her for murder. In a long trial, a life filled with affairs and the trading of sex for patronage for her husband's art came to light, including Steinheil being the mistress of Flix Faure, the French president who died of a stroke in the middle of a dalliance with her. A tale of barely hidden affairs, unsolved murder, and scandal is skillfully interwoven with the larger historical context of the Dreyfus affair, women's history, and France creeping towards WWI. Fans of true crime and women's history will find this a page-turning read.
